Most of the time, it’s the first bit of information available to your audience, from readers to collectors. It allows them to understand your motivations are as an artist, what your background is, and reveals significant facts about you and your craft. Writing about yourself can be challenging. Here are some guidelines you should follow when describing yourself in an artist biography:

1. Always write in the third person. This will allow you to sound more professional. 2. Your first sentence should be capture your audience’s attention- it should tell your audience what is most prominent about you as an artist or about your works. 3. Introduce your name, medium, and some information about our background. Background information should include where you were born, where you work, how you became interested in art, and who you are inspired by. 4. Include where you studied or trained. If this doesn’t apply to you, state that you’re a self-taught artist. 5. Think about what makes you stand out as an artist. If you have participated in a significant group of solo exhibition or won any awards, make a note to include this as it paints a better image of your reputation as an artist. How do I ship my artwork?

If your artwork has been sold, the standard process for shipment to the client is as follows:

Check the condition of your Artwork
Print the Artwork’s Certificate of Authenticity
Pack your Artwork
Organise Shipping to the Customer
Send Tracking Details

1. Condition Check Before shipping your artwork, you will need to send at least 5 high-resolution images of your artwork to The Artling team for our condition check. The list of required images are as follows:

Full front view
Full back view
Left-side view
Right-side view
Detailed close-up shots Our team will review these images, and let you know if we have any questions or concerns. Once you have our approval, you can then pack the artwork for shipment.

2. Certificate of Authenticity For every artwork sold, please prepare a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for the artwork. Let us know if you need a template for this.

3. Pack Artwork Once the condition check is completed, you can prepare your artwork along with the COA for shipping. To protect your artwork, it is crucial that they are packed securely with sufficient packing materials in order to prevent any damage during transit.

Look at your peers’ artworks in similar media and see how your prices compare. Have your works been included in exhibitions before? Have you won art awards or prizes recently? Consider the cost of your materials. Is your artwork a Unique Work or an Editioned Work?
Lastly, make sure you include The Artling’s commission in the price you upload to the website. If you’re still unsure, get in touch with our team here who can provide further advice.

Consider the medium you used, what you were inspired by, and which artists were your inspirations behind the piece. A perfect artwork description constantly keeps the customer in mind and is aimed at telling them how this artwork came about.

While there is no set template or guideline you can follow in writing the perfect description, here are some pointers you should consider:

What genre does your art fall into? (E.g. Pop, surrealism, figurative, still life)
What techniques did you use to create this work? Describe to your audience how this work was made.
What inspired you to create this work? Perhaps a particular landscape or experience from a point in your life?
What does this work mean to you? Were there particular feelings you were trying to demonstrate or perhaps felt whilst making this piece?
